Hola,

Debian celebrates its 17th birthday

The Debian Project is pleased to mark the 17th anniversary of its start.
As the official project history states [1]: “The Debian Project was officially founded by Ian Murdock on August 16th, 1993. At that time, the whole concept of a ‘distribution’ of Linux was new. Ian intended Debian to be a distribution which would be made openly, in the spirit of Linux and GNU”.

1: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/project-history/ch-intro

Over the last seventeen years Debian has grown significantly.  Initiated as a small project with just a handful of developers it now has more than 1000 contributors from many corners of the globe. Documentation has been written in numerous languages, and it now has tens of thousands of software packages, all following the Debian Free Software Guidelines [2].

2: http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines

Thanks to the contributions of individual developers, translators, graphic designers, system administrators, users and many others, Debian continues to thrive in the wider Free Software ecosystem.  Debian is used by a number of “derivative” distributions that further expand the reach of Debian’s software and Debian’s philosophy of putting the user first.

Under the auspices of Software In the Public Interest [3] and through the Debian Partners program [4] Debian continues to work with some of the largest names in hardware and software development. Debian has always striven to support a broad range of hardware with high-quality, well tested software and continues to work with numerous partners in various industries to do so. Debian is also widely used in the computational and engineering disciplines in areas such as astronomy, bioinformatics, and physics.

4: http://www.debian.org/partners/

The Debian Project continues to welcome contributions in all forms, from users to developers, encouraging people to download, use, modify, and distribute its source code in the hopes that it is useful. The project will release Debian 6.0, code named “Squeeze”, at some point this year once the hard work of fixing release critical bugs is finished. In the spirit of the Free Software community, Debian welcomes everyone to participate in this and all of Debian’s activities and looks forward to the next seventeen years.

Debian users are invited to use http://thank.debian.net/ to express their gratitude and submitt congratulations.

Recuperar particiones eliminadas con TestDisk

Domingo, 8 agosto 2010 9 comentarios

Hola,

Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” frozen                             press@debian.org
August 6th, 2010                http://www.debian.org/News/2010/20100806
————————————————————————

In this very moment, during the ongoing annual Debian Developer Conference “Debconf10″ in New York, Debian’s release managers have announced a major step in the development cycle of the upcoming stable release Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”:

Debian “Squeeze” has now been frozen.

In consequence this means that no more new features will be added and all work will now be concentrated on polishing Debian “Squeeze” to achieve the quality Debian stable releases are known for.

The upcoming release will use Linux 2.6.32 as its default kernel in the installer and on all Linux architectures.

New features of the upcoming release include:
* State of the art desktop environments, based on KDE 4.4.5, Gnome 2.30.0, LXDE 0.5.0, XFCE 4.6.2, X.org 7.5, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 and many other applications.
* Stable and current versions of common server software such as Apache 2.2.16, PHP 5.3.2, MySQL 5.1.48, PostgreSQL 8.4.4 and Samba 3.4.
* Modern interpreters and compilers for all common languages such as Python 2.6 and 3.1, Perl 5.10, GHC 6.12 and GCC 4.4.
* DKMS, a framework to generate Linux kernel modules whose sources do not reside in the Linux kernel source tree.
* Dependency-based ordering of init scripts using insserv, allowing parallel execution to shorten the time needed to boot the system.

Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” will also be accompied by variants based on the FreeBSD kernel for amd64 and i386 machines, together with the GNU libc and userland as a “technology preview”. Users of these versions
however should be warned that the quality of these ports is still catching up with the outstanding high quality of our Linux ports, and that some advanced desktop features are not supported yet.
However, the support of common server software is strong and extends the features of Linux-based Debian versions by the unique features known from the BSD world. This is the first time a Linux distribution has been extended to also allow use of a non-Linux kernel.

Further work
————
A number of bug squashing parties will be organized before the new distribution is released in order to classify and fix the remaining known problems in the new distribution. As the set of features has now been finalized for “Squeeze”, developers can now begin to create documentation such as release notes and the installation guide.
Interested users and developers are invited to join the #debian-bugs IRC channel on irc.debian.org and help with these efforts or test out pre-release versions of “Squeeze”. To support more users, the Debian project also asks for help with translating the new documentation to as many languages as possible.

About Debian
————

The Debian Project was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock to be a truly free, community project. Since then the project has grown to be one of the largest and most influential open source projects.  Over three thousand volunteers from all over the world work together to create and maintain Debian software. Translated into over 30 languages, and supporting a huge range of computer types, Debian calls itself the”universal operating system”.

En el correo vienen las instrucciones para la actualización:

How to upgrade to Mobile Maps 10.

1. Uninstall Sygic Mobile Maps 9 from your Nokia N900. Go to App Manager in your device, click on Uninstall and choose Mobile Maps – Application.Confirm by clicking Uninstall.

After you have uninstalled Mobile Maps from your device connect your mobile phone to your PC/Mac in Mass storage mode / Data transfer mode (not PC Suite mode or ActiveSync), so the device will be present as separate Disk letter in My Computer (for Windows) or Disk icon on Desktop (for Mac OS X). Open the folder with your device and you should see folders: /Drive, /Maps,/Res and SetupMobileMaps.deb. Delete those folders, just to be sure they are not located in your device.

2. Please click on the link below to download .zip archive with files needed to run application (+/-2GB).

3.After downloading, unzip this archive. If you have Windows ME or XP, Vista, Widows7 or Mac OS X, just double-click on the zip file or folder, it should open just as if it was a regular file or folder on your computer.

4. Copy content of unzipped folder (folders: /Drive, /Maps, /Res etc…) directly to root of Internal memory drive.(It is necessary to copy all folders to Internal memory, not SD card. Otherwise application won’t run.)

IMPORTANT: Folders Drive, Res and Maps must be located directly in the root of Internal memory drive – not in any other folder. (for example: H:/Drive = OK, H:/Sygic Mobile Maps/Drive = Wrong; drive letter can vary according to your computer).

5. Open File manager in Maemo, locate and execute file SetupMobileMaps.deb stored in initial folder of N900. Installation should start afterward. If you are unable to install file SetupMobileMaps.deb because system asks which application should be used to open .deb package or any problem with certificate occurs, it might be caused by your old phone firmware. In that case, you have 2 options:

Update your phone to latest firmware available via: Application Manager > Update. Latest firmware available is: V10.2010.19-1 or

1, Install rootsh*
2, Gain root access **
3, Install package via console (X Terminal):

dpkg –i /home/user/MyDocs/SetupMobileMaps.deb (This command is case sensitive)

*Note: As rootsh is the simplest option, and does not require a desktop computer or running additional services, it is the recommended method for gaining root access. rootsh is available in Extras, and can be installed from the Application manager if you have Extras enabled.

**Note: From the console (X Terminal), type&run sudo gainroot (or root for short). This will give you a root access.

Actualizado:

Durante varias horas los servidores de Sygic estuvieron colapsados pero al final pude descargarlo e instalarlo. Para la instalación seguimos las instrucciones del correo. Ya lo tengo funcionando sin problemas.
